2005 - New Years Day Ride

As usual our rides turn out to be adventures!!

We gathered at YSA at 10 AM. (Since it was New Years Day we agreed that doing a “brunch” ride was a good idea) It was great to see so many members for our first ride of the year. A total of 40 members did the ride on 29 bikes! What a turn out! One can only hope that all of our rides this year will have the same turnout!

We went thru the usual safety briefing and getting everyone’s ride waivers up to date then set up our Ride Captains and Tail Gunners. Since we had such a large turnout we broke up into four groups. It was rather impressive to be leading the front group and looking in my rear view seeing bike after bike behind me.

We had the groups close but not too close together. The four groups all moved into and thru the traffic without a hitch and the ride was rather uneventful until we got down I-10 around the Chandler Blvd exit. As we headed south we ran into a fog bank that got thicker and thicker as we went.

By the time we got to Queen Creek Rd we were all chatting on the radio’s wondering if we had made a wrong turn and if we were close to the Golden Gate Bridge!! At one point the fog was so dense that it was collecting on our windshields and mirrors enough to have water droplets form. Needless to say with the fog the temperature dropped quite a bit.

Having left YSA in the warm sun with blue sky and running into the fog bank was quite a contrast.
As we got into Maricopa and closer to the casino the sky began to clear and the sun was warming us once again.  Once the last group got in and parked we all made our way in to the casino and the found our way to the Harvest Buffet.

Due to our numbers we ended up being spread out a bit but still close enough together that moving around to visit was easy. The food selection wasn’t bad at all and everyone seemed to get their fill. Several of us had more than our fill and needed to get up and move around a bit!! All in all it was a great way to start off the riding year.

Once we were all done feasting the large group split up into a few smaller groups. A few stayed at the casino to make their donations, a few headed home via the most direct way, a few turned out of the lot and continued riding and a few others took the long way home to the west side of town thru the Indian Reservation.

I have to say I am extremely pleased with the turn out and am hopeful to see the enthusiasm that the Chapter has now continue on thru the rest of the riding year.
